Written by legendary Black feminist poet and playwright Ntozake Shange, Sassafrass, Cypress & Indigo is a fictional story of three Black sisters and their mother living in Gullah-Geechee South Carolina and their life's work spinning, weaving, and dyeing cloth.

In line with the tactile creativity that shapes her characters' lives, Shange  weaves their story together with myriad mediums – letters, recipes, dream stories and journal entries, providing an intimate look into each woman's journey towards self-realization.
