Gary Snyder

The Back Country

Divided into four sections – Far West, Far East, Kali, and Back – this sensual and articulate collection of beat poetry traverses the coasts and woods of the American West, Japan, where Snyder for years studied Zen, a trip to India, and back to California with these recent Eastern experiences as a new lens.

Additionally, The Back Country features a selection of Snyder's translations of the Japanese poet Miyazawa Kenji's work, a writer he felt a particular kinship to.
