Gaucha Hammock, Vegetable Tanned Leather

Naturally elegant, this single-seat hammock is handmade from undyed, vegetable tanned* leather, cut, folded, and braided from a single piece of raw leather which provides ultra-durability and allows the hammock to take advantage of the leather's natural resistance.

Artisan-made in the northwestern Argentinian province of Corrientes, a region with a rich history in leather craftsmanship.

Each hide has unique characteristics and can include variations in color, wrinkles, and markings. Undyed, naturally tanned leather is revered for the subtle patina it develops over time, slowly transforming and becoming more tied to those who use it, deepening in both complexity and meaning. We consider these recordings part of what make natural leather special.

*Tanning is the process of curing raw hide into leather. Vegetable tanning is an organic process reliant upon the natural tannins contained within plants, and takes about 8 weeks to complete. By contrast, the majority of leather in the world is tanned by chemical methods (typically chrome), which is known to have harmful impacts on human health as well as the environment.
